Dynamic Forms for Salesforce: Limitations

If you are part of the Salesforce ecosystem, you will know that Dynamic Forms has been a game-changing feature, one that empowers users to streamline their layout and only show the most relevant information. While Dynamic Forms is one of the most innovative and useful features to come out of Salesforce in years, this doesn’t mean that it is without limitations. In this article, we check out some of the top Dynamic Forms Salesforce limitations, and also look at how you can try to overcome them.

5 Salesforce Dynamic Forms Limitations

1. Unfortunately, the first Dynamic Forms Salesforce limitation is that it does not support all Salesforce components. This includes both custom and standard components so be sure to do your research before implementing Dynamic Forms.
2. Field management has some constraints: you can of course dynamically hide and display fields in dynamic forms but the number of fields you can display at any given time is limited. Similarly, you are limited to 100 fields in a Field Section component column and to only 100 sections for each region. What does this mean? Well, if you exceed these numbers then the remaining fields and sections are excluded when importing fields from a page layout. The fields and sections that have been left out will have to be added manually, which is a bit of a drag. In addition, if you choose to split two columns into 1, and your original two columns contained more than 100 fields put together then only the first 100 fields are included. You lose the rest!
3. The next Dynamic Forms Salesforce limitation is working with custom templates or pinned regional templates. It’s impossible with Dynamic Forms and is not supported. Similarly, you can’t have blank spaces.
4.. If you have a complex form with numerous conditions then you may experience performance problems. This is less than ideal if the reason you chose to use Dynamic Forms in the first place is that it allowed you to show and hide the data in a manner customized to your business.
5. Another known issue is that Dynamic Forms might clash with your existing triggers and validation rules if you choose to hide these or set them as read-only. You need to make sure that your existing triggers and validation rules stay intact.

Salesforce Dynamic Forms for Standard Objects

It’s important to bear in mind that apart from the 5 Dynamic Forms Salesforce limitations above, the feature has not always supported standard Salesforce objects. Dynamic Forms has been improved and made great strides in this department and it now supports the following standard objects:

Accounts

Leads

Opportunities

Dynamic Forms has long been compatible with custom objects and Salesforce is currently working on providing full support for Dynamic Forms and Salesforce standard objects.

Are there Salesforce Flow Limitations for Dynamic Forms?

Salesforce has done a lot of work to ensure that Salesforce Flow and Dynamic Forms work well together and you can actually insert a Dynamic Form inside your Flow! This automatically syncs your flow with Salesforce objects and it is easy to set up your flow by simply dragging a record field into it!

However, we have another Dynamic Forms Salesforce limitation that we need to remind you about, and that is the feature will not be compatible with tools such as Process Builder or Visual Workflow if they are being used in Salesforce Classic. This is because Dynamic Forms is not available with Salesforce Classic.

Salesforce Dynamic Forms Roadmap

You can find the latest Roadmap for Salesforce Dynamic Forms here. The Summer ’23 Salesforce Release has seen the introduction of some amazing new features including:

A Beta version of Dynamic Forms for the mobile experience. In the past, Dynamic Forms has only been available on Desktop which has prevented the experience from being accessible on the go from your mobile device. The newly released Beta version supports Cases, Accounts, Leads, Opportunities, and custom objects. Of course, being a Beta version, this feature is not yet finished and it is up to you to use it at your own discretion.

You now have the power to enable the “Align fields horizontally” in Dynamic Forms. The beauty of this is that you get to work across columns to make sure that fields in a given Field Section are horizontally aligned and that there aren’t any strange gaps on the page.

As from the Summer ’23 Salesforce Release, you can use Accordions and Tabs in your Dynamic Forms. Add multiple other components inside of Accordions and Tabs to customize the user experience.

There is still lots to look forward to and in Winter ’24 you can expect General Availability of Dynamic Forms for mobile. In addition, the plan is for Dynamic Forms to support over 600 standard Salesforce objects!

Is there an Alternative to Salesforce Dynamic Forms?

If you are looking for dynamic forms and want to overcome any Dynamic Forms Salesforce limitations, then you should definitely start looking on the AppExchange. We recommend browsing for apps that have robust Salesforce integration as well as a rating of at least 4,5/ 5. Reviewers don’t lie and the Salesforce community is particularly knowledgeable and communicative about the tools they use and we are sure you will find comments on Dynamic Forms Salesforce limitations. We suggest that any Dynamic Forms alternative should meet the following requirements:
